icon Grouse Hunting Tips

I received a request for information regarding grouse hunting near the Lower Mainland.

Grouse live throughout the province of BC however some of the best hunting is near farmland in "dry" belts or zones. Southern BC between Princeton and Lake Osoyoos I find is excellent for "early" hunts in September and early October. The "blow off" of mature seeds from the fields disperses throughout the hillsides and promulgates the cultivated crops. The habitat is wooded providing protection and the dryness can prevent the premature death of an early chick hatch which are very susceptible to moist cold weather in early spring.

Simply driving along the Similkameen River and taking 4x4 roads into the hills along both sides can produce exciting hunting. A .22 or small caliber shotgun (.410 or 20 gauge) is all that is necessary. A 12 gauge can be used but you must sight it in because when you "pattern" it you will find a large hole in the target. Often this hole is on the lower left side of the target because most people are right handed and learn to lead a flying bird holding over and in front. Thus the advantage of this grouping of shot pellets. I would recommend #6 or #7 1/2 size shot as most of the birds will be 3 lbs. or less.

Good Luck!
